What we collect
- Tips and emails. If you email us, we receive your email address, name (if given) and whatever you include in the message.
- The tip tool. The drafting tool on our tip line runs entirely in your browser. We do not receive anything you type unless you choose to send it by email.
- Server logs. Our hosting provider records technical data such as IP address, browser type and pages requested, for security and to keep the site running.
- Consent preference. Your cookie choice is stored in your browser's local storage. See our Cookie Policy.
Why we use it and our legal basis
We use emails to read, verify and respond to tips and corrections (legitimate interests in running an editorial service). We use server logs to protect the site against abuse (legitimate interests). We do not sell personal data or use it for advertising profiling.
Sources
We protect the identity of people who send tips. We will not name a source without their explicit permission, except where required by law.
How long we keep it
Tip emails are kept for up to 24 months unless they become part of a published story's records. Server logs are typically retained for up to 30 days.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you may request access to, correction of or deletion of your personal data, object to processing, or ask us to restrict it. Contact [email protected]. You may also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
